The Power of Visuals
I’m not a graphic artist or professional photographer, but I’m passionate about integrating images in my content to make it more valuable to my community. Professional service and thought leader content doesn’t mean boring, pedantic and academic. Visuals are a great way to increase its appeal to our readers and help us deserve their precious attention.
The conceptual and connected world requires creative decision making, problem solving and communication from a multi-dimensional perspective. Yet we habitually think, speak and write from our left brain hemisphere which is analytical and linear. Visuals are a more right brain media. Creating and integrating them in our content helps us “see” the solutions in problems and bring our ideas to life.
“The soul never thinks without an image.” – Aristotle
Visuals work great in blog posts. Emotional images add impact and spice up the text. Metaphorical images (and text) inspire and make the abstract concrete. Mind maps and concept maps depict relationships and connections with one or more concepts.
Metaphor transforms the strange into the familiar.
- Cynthia Ozick
When I develop ideas and solutions for my clients or for my practices, I begin with a graphic. The image gives me the platform upon which to build and communicate. Another benefit of strategic images is in giving the right-brain the right of way, to "see" things in a different way. That way is more intuitive, conceptual and multi-dimensional. Creative solutions arise when the thinking, analytical and linear left-brain isn't dominant. You don't need artistic ability or graphics arts skills. Think "back of the napkin" sketch!

Mind maps and concept maps provide a single view of a complex web of knowledge, direction and inter-relationship. I use them frequently to illustrate methods, benefits, system architectures and process flows. They're very useful for presenting the RedShift integral approach to social business for small and large clients. They make excellent posters which are social markers for personal and organizational change program support and provide remarkable mementos of RedShift change programs.
