Sharepoint
Although social media and technologies are widely thought of as consumer-driven, the real value is increasingly seen as business-driven and referred to as Ent 2.0. A large subset of the business social media activity takes place behind the corporate firewall giving knowledge workers different, faster and more efficient ways to communicate, collaborate and share.
Many of the fastest and easiest to use tools are open source, operate in the cloud, and are free or inexpensive. But if the size of the installed base, and the security and privacy controls critical to most mid and large-size companies are considered, Ent 2.0 means Microsoft Sharepoint. It has 17,000 clients accounting for $1 billion in revenue for Microsoft and a Web-based platform central to Microsoft’s long-term cloud strategy.
The major issue is getting more people to use it more effectively through:
- Improving design, usability and functionality
- Changing behavior: motivation, desire, fear, resistance
Why?
- Our efforts to communicate Sharepoint benefits to our employees has made no difference in motivating people to use it more.
- People were initially enthusiastic about Sharepoint, but its like the novelty wore off.
- If we can’t get the participation we can’t get the development resources. We don’t develop Sharepoint, so people tell us there’s no benefit to it – a chicken/egg challenge we’ve been unable to resolve.
What
- Develop or revise needs assessment, requirements definition and systems architecture, to bring the Sharepoint solution into alignment with business objectives.
- Interview people to understand their motivational triggers and communicate the findings compellingly.
- Coach, facilitate and mentor to identify and overcome resistance and to create an atmosphere in which change can occur.
- Identify roadblocks – people, governance or technical – that discourage risk-taking and enforce status quo behavior and inconsequential results.
- Identify opportunities to improve user interface with the following qualities: simplicity, intuitive, integrated with existing workflows.
